Gender and Power in the Nordic Countries (2008-2009)
Commissioned by the Nordic Gender Equality Ministers NIKK carries out a project on gender and power in the Nordic countries
during 2008-2009. According to the task outlined by the Committee of Senior Officials for Gender Equality, the purpose of
the project is to produce knowledge to support the political decision-making process and to emphasize gender equality measures
that influence the mechanisms behind structural power. The project is also to improve the understanding of what the concepts
of gender and power mean among those who prepare and formulate gender equality policies. Another important aim of the project
is to identify and illuminate opportunities for improved gender balance in decision-making bodies and for more space for political
action in relation to increased gender equality.
Gendered Citizenship in Multicultural Europe: The Impact of Contemporary Women's Movements (FEMCIT) (2007-2011)
What role have women’s movements played in transforming European societies and European culture since the 1970's? FEMCIT explores
the relationship between the changing forms and practices of gendered citizenship in a multicultural Europe, and the demands
and practices which have emerged from contemporary women’s movements. We are studying how different and changing notions and
practices of citizenship relate to gender issues and we explore their implications for policies. NIKK/Solveig Bergman is responsible
for Work Package 2: Social citizenship: The impact of gender-based organising and claim making on child care and parental-leave
policies in a multicultural Europe.
Prostitution in the Nordic Countries (2007-2008)
NIKK, has recently conducted a research project entitled “Prostitution in the Nordic Countries” on behalf of the Nordic Council
of Ministers for Gender Equality (MR-JÄM). The aim of the project was to describe, illuminate and analyse the situation pertaining
to prostitution and human trafficking for sexual purposes in the Nordic countries.
Multidimensional Discrimination Policies in the Nordic Countries (2007)
NIKK was commissioned by the Finnish chairmanship of the Nordic Council of Ministers to draw up the report "Multidimensional
Discrimination Policies in the Nordic Countries -an overview", charting status in the Nordic countries. The report describes
former and current anti-discrimination legislation in the individual countries and charts current proposals within legislation
and administration towards a new policy in the field. The report also points out tendencies in the arguments for revisions
and deals with responses from various organisations.
Nordic Research School in Interdisciplinary Gender Research (2004-2009)
The Nordic Research School in Interdisciplinary Gender Research is a co-operation between more than 30 universities in the
Nordic and Baltic countries. The main aim of the school is to offer a programme of high quality and cutting edge PhD courses
in Interdisciplinary Gender Studies as well as courses for Gender Studies PhD supervisors.
Youth, Gender and Pornography in the Nordic Countries (2004-2006)
A two-year project to map out the effects of pornography on Nordic youths perceptions of gender. The project is financed by
the Nordic countries and the Nordic Council of Ministers.
