Prostitution in the Nordic Countries

The report "Prostitution in the Nordic Countries. Conference report, Stockholm, October 16–17, 2008" summarises the results of a research project conducted by the Nordic Gender Institute – NIKK and commissioned by the Nordic Council of Ministers for Gender Equality. The aim of the project was to present and discuss research on prostitution and human trafficking for sexual purposes in the Nordic countries and the autonomous territories of the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Åland. The project has compiled data on the extent of prostitution, as well as on both the legal and the social treatment of these issues. The report also presents results from quantitative and qualitative studies on attitudes to prostitution and human trafficking for sexual purposes. The project comprised eleven Nordic researchers from various disciplines and from all the Nordic countries. Download report (pdf).

NIKK magasin no 2/2009: Gender and Climate Change

Men drive cars and fly more than women, who tend to use public transport. Poor women in developing countries are those hardest hit by climate change. The focus in encountering climate change has often been on technical development and research within the sciences. This is undoubtedly necessary, but yet not enough. More research and focus are also needed on both how people are affected by climate change and how they can contribute to stopping it. NIKK magasin 2.2009 puts focus on gender equality and climate change. Download (pdf)

Gender Equality and Quality of Life. A Norwegian Perspective

In order to find out more about men, women and gender equality, a representative survey was made in Norway in 2007, which was more detailed and comprehensive than earlier survey research. The report describes the results of the survey – the changing, uneven and partially conflicting gender equality developments among men and women today. The survey has a sample of 2,805 women and men, who answered a questionnaire with 350 questions and statements on gender equality in spring 2007. The study was financed by the Norwegian Ministry of Children and Equality and carried out by NIKK in co-operation with the Work Research Institute (WRI). The team was led by Øystein Gullvåg Holter, NIKK, and included Helge Svare and Cathrine Egeland, WRI. Order a printed copy at nikk@nikk.uio.no or Download report (pdf)

NIKK magasin no 1/2009: Prostitution - Leadership

Berit Ås from Norway is best known for her theory on the five master suppression techniques. She developed the theory in order to be able to explain to other women why they are so often rendered invisible and not taken seriously by men in positions of power. Master suppression techniques are part of the body language and can only be countered by being pointed out. In management issues master suppression techniques are constantly topical – not least when it comes to women in leading positions. This issue of NIKK magasin highlights the difference between the situation within politics and in business. The issue also includes articles on prostitution in the Nordic countries. Researchers from all the Nordic countries studied the extent of and legislation on prostitution, as well as social measures in the field, and women’s and men’s attitudes towards prostitution.
