The Nordic gender equality co-operation under the Nordic Council of Ministers dates back to 1974 and has had an important impact on the development of the Nordic countries. The co-operation is grounded in a shared vision of a gender-equal Nordic region with equal opportunities, rights and responsibilities for all citizens regardless of gender.
The countries are similar in many ways, at the same time as some aspects of their gender equality policy differ. This implies important benefits of engaging in co-operation, policy discussions and reviews of strategies to identify the most effective ways to achieve shared objectives.
