The project on young people with experience of prostitution/sex for compensation in the Nordic countries was initiated by the Swedish Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers in 2018. NIKK was commissioned to carry out a research study that included all Nordic countries. The purpose of the study was to compile, analyse and problematise knowledge about young people in the Nordic countries who have experience of prostitution/sex for compensation.
The study presents existing knowledge, social initiatives and, finally, relevant legislation and its application in relation to young people who have sex for payment. The results show that very few social initiatives target this group specifically. At the same time, young people who have experience of prostitution/sex for compensation differ as a group from older people with the same experience, which justifies targeted initiatives. In addition, research on young people who have experience of prostitution/sex for compensation in the Nordic countries is limited.
The report was launched in connection with the World Children’s Day on 20 November 2019 in UN City in Copenhagen, organised by UNICEF. A seminar was held in cooperation with UNICEF Denmark and the Nordic Council of Ministers/Nordic Region in Focus. The report was also presented at national seminars in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden in the winter of 2019/2020, at the universities that had carried out the sub-studies.
